Sunshine Coast Fishing Report | Thursday 18 January 2024

Welcome to this week's Sunshine Coast Fishing Report. The last week has seen some bumper catchers on the coast, with estuary fishing in particular firing after the recent rainfall. Conditions for the next week are forecast to be a combination of sunny skies and potential showers, with moderate breezes, ideal for those who favor inshore waters. Offshore conditions look prime during the early morning hours from tomorrow till Monday, before offshore winds get crazy from Tuesday.

Thunderstorms may roll in, particularly towards the weekend, which could stir the waters and bring about an interesting bite. Tides are on the rise following the new moon, peaking mid-week, suggesting excellent conditions for estuary fishing. Temperatures remain steady and warm, continuing the stretch of hot muggy days we've endured recently.

Offshore fishos have enjoyed another week of good catches despite the varying conditions. The Hards continue to be a reliable spot for Amberjack, Snapper, and Cobia, while those fishing the Barwon Banks have reported good catches of Tuskfish and Hussar. The FADs remain a hotspot, with Mahi Mahi being hooked regularly. Both Spanish Mackerel and Spotty Mackerel have been actively biting in these areas, as well as on the nearer reefs. Sunshine Reef is offering a variety of species, with Coral Trout, Tuskfish, Sweetlip, Pearl Perch, and Snapper making up the bulk of catches. Further south, Caloundra 5 and 7 Mile have been productive, yielding steady catches of  Snapper, Sweetlip, and Tuskfish.

Maroochy River

The Maroochy River has continued to deliver the goods, with lots of exellent catches reported over the last week. We've had to order in extra  live beach worms on quite a few occasions recently, as the demand for them to chase Whiting has been huge. Whiting are still being caught in huge numbers, particularly at the lower end and around Chambers Island. Trevally, Flathead and Bream are also keeping lines tight. 

We've had reports of awesome catches at the Cod Hole, particularly in spots where freshwater and saltwater mix. Giant Herring and Moses Perch have been spotted, with Mangrove Jack and Jewfish also making an appearance. For those targeting these species, live baits have proven to be particularly effective. 

Additionally, mud crab catches continue to be strong. Anglers setting pots in the Maroochy River are reporting good numbers of these tasty crustaceans. With the potential for more rain this week, it's a great time to get the pots out. 

Noosa

In the Noosa River this week, Tailor have been actively biting, while plenty of Bream are on offer throughout the river. For those chasing Flathead, catches have been reported on the run-out tide. Trevally continue to be spotted around Noosa Sound, with Mangrove Jack in the lower reaches. 

Caloundra

At Caloundra, catches of Grunter Bream, Bream and Whiting have been reported in the passage, while plenty of Flathead and Whiting continue to be caught at the bar entrance. Good size Mangrove Jacks are still firing, with live bait your best bet. 

Beach fishing this week has been good, with some nice opportunities to wet a line with minimum wind. Dart and Tailor catches have been reported  along the stretch from Marcoola to Mudjimba, with this spot also the pick for catching live beach worms. Mooloolaba has also been fishing well, with some nice Tailor and Sand Whiting caught this week at the Mooloolah River entrance.
