Welcome to this week's Sunshine Coast Fishing Report! With sunny days and a new moon on August 4th, it’s shaping up to be a fantastic week for fishing. Onshore and offshore winds will pose a challenge however, so make sure to check conditions before heading out. Expect sunny skies and cool overnight temps this weekend with daytime temperatures around 21°C and cooling to 8-10°C at night. Cloud cover and light showers are forecast from Tuesday next week, however temps will remain steady.
Offshore fishos can expect southerly winds at 15 to 20 knots today, reaching up to 25 knots offshore. Seas will range from 1 to 2 meters, increasing by early evening. The weather will be mostly sunny, but caution is advised due to large and powerful surf conditions. On Saturday, winds will turn southeasterly in the evening, with seas around 1.5 to 2 meters and a 60% chance of showers, possibly with thunderstorms offshore south of Maroochydore. Sunday will bring lighter winds and smaller seas, making it a good day for fishing.
Have you ever wondered why fish are more active around the new moon? The new moon brings stronger gravitational forces, resulting in higher tides and increased water movement. This activity stirs up nutrients and baitfish, attracting larger predatory fish and making them more active and easier to catch. The darker nights of the new moon reduce fish visibility, making them less cautious and more likely to bite. Fishos can expect heightened activity in both offshore and estuary environments during the new moon. Species such as Bream, Flathead and Tailor are typically more responsive to bait and lures during this period, making it a great time to wet a line.
Offshore
Conditions have been challenging over the past week, but those who have ventured out have reported catches of Sweetlip, Tuskfish, Trevally, Amberjack, Cobia and Kingfish. Tuna have also been reported off Caloundra. The reefs remain productive despite the Snapper and Pearl Perch closure. Remember, the closure applies to all Queensland tidal waters and ends on August 15.
Noosa
The lower reaches of the Noosa River through to Tewantin continue to fish well, with catches of Bream, Tailor and Trevally reported over the past week. Plenty of good sized Flathead and Bream have also been on the chew at Woods Bay.
Maroochy
There's still plenty of Bream being caught in the Maroochy River, through the middle to upper reaches, while the Cod Hole continues to be the spot for Trevally. Live beach worms are also taking plenty of good size Whiting at the mouth and around Picnic Point, with the odd Tailor also reported. The smaller creeks are seeing a few nice Flathead catches.
Caloundra
Tailor have been reported off local beaches at Caloundra, while Bream and Whiting are being caught in good numbers. Some decent sized Flathead have also been on the chew in the passage.
Beach
Bream, Dart, Tailor and Jewfish have been reported of most local beaches from Caloundra to Noosa. Look for gutters and check your local forecast to avoid the windy conditions.
